Beauty protip: Primer

Hey ladies! It's been a while since I've posted, I know, but I'm sure we all know how life catches up with us. To make up for it, I'll be posting a little bit extra in the days to come, so keep an eye out for new entries.

Today, let's talk about makeup. Specifically, foundation primer. If you've ever been in a beauty store, you might have ooh'd and ahh'd over some expensive foundation primer that's supposed to miraculously make your pores disappear, smooth out fine lines, and create a "canvas" for your liquid or powder foundation. Of course, these products are ridiculously expensive (I'm looking at you, Smashbox). I paid about seventeen dollars for a 0.5 ounce travel-sized tube of high-end primer because I wanted to test it once without shelling out thirty or forty bucks for a full-sized tube. Let's be real here; most people (ie. me) don't have the sort of disposable income that would allow them to buy tons of this stuff on a whim.

"But what if I still want a fancy foundation primer?" you might ask. Well, an excellent drug store alternative is, rather surprisingly, Monistat's Soothing Care Chafing Relief Powder-Gel. I haven't tried this personally, but have read dozens of testimonials and reviews of people who loved using this stuff. Yeah, it sounds weird, but if you look at the ingredients, both contain dimethicone as an active ingredient. Plus, Monistat's gel is for sensitive areas, so using it on your face shouldn't be an issue. Keep in mind that this is not the same as Monistat's yeast infection creams-- that'd be kind of gross.

At about eight bucks a pop, this is definitely a much cheaper alternative to more expensive brand-name cosmetics. But don't just take my word for it. Here is a keen review from the beauty section of glamour.com. Happy shopping!

How Do I Rock This?? Vol. 1 Post 2

Happy Spring my lovely Pudgies!!!!
I'm so excited to bring you my second edition of How Do I Rock This, even if its a little late!!

So lets jump right in!!

SUNDRESSES!!!!
Its getting warmer and you want to wear cute, cool dresses. If you're like me you might be a little shy about your arms or legs. I have a few tricks that will have you looking fab without burning up!!!

To keep your arms a little covered and to avoid that dreaded underarm bulge throw a cute, classic short sleeved cardigan on over your dress. Make sure you find one that is thin and light to keep you cool.

And for your bottom half...

Lacey leggings!! They will add that little something extra to your outfit and hide all that you feel uncomfortable about.

Now put on your fab sundress outfit, slap on your sunglasses, slip into your fave wedge sandals and rock your local park!!

XOXO

Mochi's Recipe of the Week: Butternut Squash Soup

Hello my lovelies! Mochi here with round two of "recipe of the week," improved with the addition of pictures! Our recipe this time is a very delicious soup made with butternut squash. Once again, the recipe hails from epicurious.com, my favorite online recipe database.

I've made similar soups in the past, but this recipe calls for the inclusion of star anise, which is something I hadn't considered in the past. It makes sense, though; butternut squash is naturally sweet, and anise boosts the sweetness, adding richness to the otherwise savory soup.

Here's what you'll need:

1 tablespoon finely grated peeled fresh ginger
2/3 cup chopped shallot
1 garlic clove, thinly sliced
3 whole star anise
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 3/4 lb butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces (5 cups)
4 cups chicken stock or broth
2 cups water
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil

To prepare:
Cook shallot, garlic, and anise in butter in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring, until shallot is softened, about 5 minutes. Add squash, stock, and water and simmer, uncovered, until squash is very tender, about 20 minutes. Remove star anise.

Purée soup in 2 batches in a blender (use caution when blending hot liquids) until very smooth, about 1 minute per batch, then transfer to cleaned pan and keep warm, covered.

I couldn't find whole star anise, so I got pure anise extract from the spice aisle instead. I also added one medium-sized sweet onion and about one to two cups of mushrooms. The recipe on epicurious calls for shrimp as well, but I made this soup for a friend who was recently hospitalized and can't eat meat for the time being. Another change I made was to add a dollop of Greek yogurt for an extra creamy tang. As suggested, I garnished with a sprig of cilantro.

How Do I Rock This??

Hello my fellow Pudgies!! Pix here with my new bi weekly post titled How Do I Rock This? I plan on taking fashion trends that seem to only be for twig girls and show ways you can rock them as a plus size girl.

SOOOO the very first trend is going to be this:

Align Center

SHORT SHORTS!!!

I know!! I can hear the WTFs from here but it can be done!! I'm a size twenty four and I have rocked short shorts!! By adding one thing...stockings!!!

I normally go with black for the slimming look but you can rock colored too!! Just stay away from white stockings and you will be set!!

Rock this look even further by adding a pair of kick ass boots!!

I highly recommend Torrid to find shorts, stockings and boots!!!

Always remember my lovely Pudgies: To be fabulous CONFIDENCE IS A MUST!!

Peace out
Pix
